With creative support from our team at Sandbox, the World Health Organization for the African Region (WHO AFRO) spearheaded a campaign to tackle the pressing issue of childhood cancer in the continent: The Advocacy and Awareness Campaign for Childhood Cancer in Africa. This campaign is designed to educate healthcare workers, engage the public, and advocate for increased funding. Through a collaborative effort, Sandbox provided digital communications, social media strategy, and visually compelling content tailored to the region. The initiative emphasizes creating adaptable materials to suit diverse countries, raising awareness about the preventable and treatable nature of many childhood cancers.

Our objectives focused on combating childhood cancers in the African region through strategic awareness, education, and advocacy. We aimed to raise awareness about childhood cancers, highlighting the urgency of early detection and treatment to save lives. By equipping healthcare workers with the skills to engage sensitively and effectively with childhood cancer survivors and their families, we strengthened care systems. Simultaneously, we advocated for increased government and policymaker focus, urging them to prioritize and fund childhood cancer prevention and control programs. Finally, we worked to educate the general public on the causes of childhood cancer, emphasizing that many types are curable with early intervention. These efforts were critical to building a well-informed society, improving care outcomes, and ensuring robust support for affected children and their families.

Sandbox employed a multi-faceted approach to achieve the campaign’s goals, leveraging expertise in copywriting, social media strategy, and graphic and motion design. Key deliverables included educational flyers, social media cards, and a toolkit for advocacy. The team also produced animated videos on the six index childhood cancers, infographics, and multi-language materials in English, French, and Portuguese. By crafting content that resonates with regional audiences, Sandbox ensured the campaign’s adaptability across Africa, emphasizing engagement and education while addressing the unique needs of each country.

This campaign has made a meaningful impact in advancing childhood cancer care in Africa. By equipping healthcare workers with critical information and resources, engaging the public with accessible content, and advocating for increased funding, the campaign has strengthened awareness and action. The tailored materials and strategic messaging have not only educated diverse audiences but also fostered regional and governmental support. These efforts contribute to a significant step forward in addressing childhood cancer prevention and treatment in Africa, aligning with WHO AFRO’s overarching mission to improve health outcomes across the continent.
